The acts of righteousness actually come from our hearts. Giving, praying, and fasting are works that should lead to God's glory not our own. We recognize that giving can help us focus on others. And that God has blessed us to bless others that praying can help us focus on God by connecting our heart to his heart and that fasting can help us recognize our true dependency is on God.
